Armadillidium Vulgare are an introduced species to Australia, and are originally from Europe. They grow as long as 18 millimeters, and when startled, roll up into a ball
They live primarily in coastal areas or in calcareous soils, which are soils with high concentrations of calcium carbonate.
Their diet is composed predominantly of rotting wood, but they will also eat lichens and algaes from walls and tree bark.
They are cold-blooded but regulate their body temperature through sunning to warm up, and staying in the shade or under debris to stay cool. Their maximum temperatures are -2 and 36 degrees celsius, outside of these they cannot survive. In order to survive winters, they can enter a state of dormancy, only waking when temperatures raise again in the spring
They are extremely docile, and are not particularly afraid of humans, so many keep them as pets, and they are even bred for colour. They can live up to three years, and are low maintenance, a suitable habitat with low light, a moist environment, and plenty of decaying matter to eat is all that they require. Even to those not keeping them as pets, they are not a concern, as they only eat rotting matter, and as such are not a danger to gardens.
